Depression Kills

Word play on my mind
Like it’s a world play I’ve designed
With an important story to tell
Please listen carefully to each and every line
I met this beautiful young girl
On a cold winters day
She introduced herself as Milli
as our conversation got under way
Her hands were shaking already
And immediately I could see
So much pain in her mind
But what came next shocked me
She cried as she conveyed her message
From a devastated mind
You see God had sent her Katrina
Now wasn’t that kind
She started with her dad
Cold love was his answer
Hurt her immensely
Now her heart is frozen over
So she busted a gut at school
Just to get his attention
Became a model student
With a golden reputation
But still daddy shunned her
So she had all this love to give
Placed it on her ill grandma
The attachment was short lived
When her grandma came to visit
She was crippled by dementia
Terrified she would forget Milli
Yet the girl was a good pretender
Think that was bad
Wait here comes the iron fist
Death took away nan’s brother
And nan was next on the list
One calm autumn evening
Four men barged into her uncle’s shop
Held a shotgun to nan’s head
While her uncle pleaded for them to stop
Held them hostage for 12 hours
As the bastards slept in her bed
Even though no one was harmed
Imagine what went on in Milli’s head
The tsunami had wrecked her thoughts
It wasn’t supposed to happen to her nan
The woman was so religious
How could this be God’s plan?
I should have been there, she said
To stop this nightmare
Bigley in our back yard,
But did anybody care?
So she did what she always did
And buried it deep down inside
Fortified her castle walls
So she could stay smiling on the outside

Still, summer was a good one,
Spent time with the ‘friends’
Inverted commas for now
Because watch how the story ends
I met her again in her second year
But what I didn’t know
Is she had sleepwalked into a battlefield
Caught a grenade about to blow
Made a deal with the devil
And threw it to her clyde
Blew him to pieces
And had nowhere left to hide
I asked her why she did this
Her eyes became teary
To self destruct was her answer
Now there’s a big bang theory
No longer miss perfect
Ashamed to look anyone in the eye
The guilt filling an empty well
The devil watched her cry
And so the play was set in motion
With a gentle push off the ledge
Falling from the top of khalifa
She was following the Joker’s edge
All she could see is herself falling
Arms flapping wildly around
But as she tried to embrace the impact
She never hit the ground
Instead she continued falling into the abyss
As light started to fade
The walls closed in
She was now living in the devil’s shade
Black and white world
There was no art attack
So she turned to her friends
To help get her back
She reached an arm out to them
Finally a smile on her face
They’ve come to rescues me she thought
But they turned away in disgrace
Ditched by her companions
When she was on death row
Not a single acknowledgement
They just went with the flow
Rather than help her swim against the tide
They stood to watch her drown
If only I had known
I would have saved her from these clowns

You see we were up against goliath
I offered to be the stone in her slinger
She fired a pellet at him
But it wasn’t the expected one hit wonder
Goliath looked unfazed
Had this strange glint in his eye
Like he knew victory was imminent
Milli was already saying goodbye
How many pills would it take?
Lucky her mother walked in just then
For her own daughter’s sake
Family is forever
She was held by the scruff
Milli knew from that moment on
Enough was now enough
You’re bipolar like silver
She was terrified to be told
That would destroy her ego
When she wanted it to be gold
Yet she had the courage to get help
Decided to take the meds
Finally she had some hope
Didn’t care what the devil said
Some light in the abyss
Turned it into a tunnel
But as she walked further on
It narrowed like a funnel
Laughter echoed around her
She’d walked right into the traps
The demon started from within
Caused her whole world to collapse
Fooled by the Trojan horse
I have never felt so helpless
She could no longer even smile
The side effects were reckless
Couldn’t eat, could sleep
Not even a single wink
Falling drastically behind on work
How bent could she think
Wore a mask so skilfully
To create a sense of stealth
But even I could see
It was leeching off her health
So I went to visit her at home
Caught her just in time
Ingraining lyrics on her body
Pain with every line
Her blade was dripping blood
But what’s all the commotion
She said she was carving out her feelings
It’s like poetry in motion
I begged her to stop
And hand over the knife
Told her that together
We’d help rebuild her life
She smiled at me weakly
And whispered ok
I told her that one day
I’d make the devil pay
I comforted her
She actually managed a smile
Told her to go to sleep
Wed made the eighth mile

The next week I went to see her
So proud of what shed become
Going through hell and back isn’t easy
It’s a one way ticket for some
Knocked on her front door
Her mother was crying as she let me in
The next thing she said
I had not seen coming
Tears flooded my eyes
It just could not be
She’d left a final note
‘Only death could free me’
Just when I thought it was all over
That the devil was dead and done
I could not have been more wrong
The nightmare had just begun

Now what if I told you
Milli didn’t go as far to die
And that she wasn’t a beautiful girl
But instead a grown guy
The one that stands before you
With a sad story to tell
No love etched into my arm
Got it serving a sentence in hell
Still I have to hide it from my family
Like a reckless drunk tattoo
That’s the life I’m facing now
And there’s nothing I can do
Why did god introduce them?
Jo Fritzl and my mind
Lock them in the same room
And told him have a good time
Everything I have ever known
Is coming into question
And i am searching for the answers
In every possible direction

But why go to all this trouble
To mask the true meaning of the story
Because no one was there to help me
I have never felt more lonely
I have served my sentence
And whilst my story is over
I don’t want anyone else to feel like I did
Always looking over their shoulder
So I beg you all
The next time you see a friend cry
Please offer them your support
And not blindly walk by
Because I flirted with death
It could’ve gone either way
Literally on a knife’s edge
Leaves me with nothing more to say
Except that I hope you save them
Because you will be helping yourself too
Never forget that one day
This might happen to you too.
